2010 Will NOT Have a Cost of Living Adjustment

The Social Security Administration announced Social Security and Supplemental Security income benefits will not increase in 2010 for a cost of living adjustment (COLA).

2010 is the first time an automatic adjustment is not being made since COLA went into effect in 1975.  This follows 2008's 5.8% COLA increase, the highest since 1982, due to a spike in consumer prices.

The fall in consumer prices has precipitated the lack of adjustment for 2010 and affects more than 57 million Americans.
