President Obama Signs Haiti Deductions Bill

On January 22nd, President Obama signed legislation that allows U.S. taxpayers making charitable contributions to Haiti relief programs before March 1, 2010, to claim those donations on their 2009 income tax return (P.L. 111-126; HR 4462).  The Senate on January 21 approved HR 4462  by unanimous consent.  This will accelerate the income tax benefits to those who contributed to the relief of victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

The house also approved the bill by unanimous consent on January 20.  This measure allows phone bills to be used as proof for taxpayers who made their donation via a text message.  Under prior law, taxpayers would have to wait until 2011 to claim a tax deduction on their 2010 returns for Haiti-related contributions.
