TAX TO-DO LIST
(For preparing your 2008 income tax returns)
Whether you prepare your own tax returns or have a tax professional prepare them, you will need to gather all the appropriate tax documentation. The following list is a sample of some of the more important items you need.
- Personal data – Social security numbers for yourself, spouse and all dependents, as well as, if applicable, the federal identification number of your daycare provider. And if you changed your name due to marriage/divorce make sure you have contacted the Social Security Administration with the change.
- Income information – Gather the following: W-2s from employers, pass-through entity forms K-1, pension forms 1099-R, social security benefit statements, gambling winnings, state income tax refunds, jury pay and alimony received.
- Home information – address change information if applicable, copies of closing statements from home sales/purchases, mortgage interest statements, Forms 1099-S and property taxes paid statements.
- Financial information – interest and dividend statements for the year, stock sale information and retirement plan distribution forms.
- Miscellaneous items – Student loan interest paid statements, tuition paid, charitable gift statements, unreimbursed employee expenses, alimony paid, farm income and expense, estimated tax payments, medical expenses and any documentation related to a casualty/disaster.
