On November 15th, 2021, the Iowa Department of Revenue partnering with Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals, the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, and the Iowa Lottery Authority launched a new online secure portal called GovConnectIowa. This is the culmination of a multi-year effort between the agencies to provide taxpayers, businesses, and tax professionals with a streamlined online portal to try to better serve Iowa taxpayers. The goal of the online portal is to streamline business registrations by providing applications or licensing for each of these agencies in one location.
The features of GovConnectIowa will be rolled out over the next four years with the first rollout beginning in November 2021 and will provide user-friendly self-service tools for business filers to register or renew certain business licenses and permits, file tax returns and reports, make payments, and communicate with state agencies. Later rollouts in the multi-year project will simplify processes for corporate income taxpayers, individual income taxpayers, local government oversight, and more.
Some features of the initial rollout of the GovConnectIowa portal allow for taxpayers to have the ability online to request a replacement refund check, request penalty waivers, respond to a letter, view tax policies and/or request tax guidance, and to file petitions.
The main portion of the initial rollout with the Iowa Department of Revenue replaces the current Iowa eFile & Pay system. As of November 2, 2021 future dating of payments via the current Iowa eFile & Pay system became unavailable as only same day payments are allowed. Taxpayers can file tax returns in one session and return later to submit payments on the date they wish to pay, or the taxpayer can future date payments though GovConnectIowa’s Quick File and Quick Pay features. On February 4, 2022 the Iowa eFile & Pay website will no longer be available for sales, use, or withholding taxes. After this date all sales, use, and withholding taxes must be filed using GovConnectIowa.
The Iowa Department of Revenue is mailing letters to existing tax permit holders with instructions on how to access their tax accounts in GovConnectIowa and to setup their new login credentials. Please do not discard this letter when it is received as it will be needed to complete your registration. Any new business registrations will need to be completed though GovConnectIowa.
