Dec 01, 2019If you are self-employed you may be able to fully deduct your health insurance premiums as well as your out- of-pocket (OOP) healthcare expenses if your spouse performs meaningful services for your self-employed business. As a self-employed person, you are already able to deduct your family’s health insurance premium; however, that deduction only reduces your income tax, not your self-employment tax. By employing your spouse and adopting a 105 Healthcare Reimbursement Plan (105 plan), you could potentially deduct your family’s health insurance premium as well as OOP expenses directly on Schedule C of your 1040. Nov 01, 2019We previously advised you of a proposed federal rule that would make it more difficult to classify employees as exempt from overtime pay. As of September 24, 2019, this proposed rule is now a final rule. It revises final regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and goes into effect on January 1, 2020. The final regulations provide that for an executive, administrative, and professional employee to be considered exempt from overtime requirements, in addition to meeting the duties test, the employee must earn an annual salary of $35,568 (a 50% increase from the current federal regulations).
